Home security is a major issue today. Whether you own your home, rent a house, or live in an apartment, it is your responsibility to make sure that your home is safe and secure. To help you evaluate your home for its safety and decide where you may be able to improve your safety measures, your mobile 24 hour locksmiths Flemington have put together this checklist for reviewing the security of the two most vulnerable aspects of your home: the doors and the windows.

Intrigue Point Safety Checklist

Doors

  • Ensure that all doors that lead into your home are constructed of solid, reliable materials
  • If any doors are showing signs of wear, age, or weakness it is crucial that they are replaced or otherwise reinforced promptly
  • Check to ensure that the doorframe is not rotting and is securely attached
  • Ensure that the hinges of the door are not exposed and cannot be removed from the outside
  • All doors should have deadbolt locks that are mounted on reinforced metal plates
  • Preferably doors should not have windows, and if they do doors should require a key to be opened from the inside and windows should be reinforced with safety film
  • It is important that there is a method for checking to see who is at a door without having to open the door. Even opening a door with a chain lock in place is not sufficiently safe
  • Ensure all doors are equipped with strike plates that have been installed with at least 3-inch screws.

Windows

  • Ensure all windows in the home, including those high on the home and in the basement have secure work, functioning locks that are always engaged
  • Particularly vulnerable windows such as those on ground level, basement windows, or those nearer landscaping or structural features that encourage access should feature security bars or security screens
  • Whenever possible no object, or landscaping feature should be kept close enough to windows that an intruder could decline and gain entry.
  • Install reed switches, these are crucial if you want your windows to trip the alarm. Reed switches will connect to the alarm and alert you of which window has been breached.

As for both doors and windows it is critical that you keep the entire outside of your home well lit. Ensure that your doors and windows are visible to the street as possible and that you have adequate lighting to eliminate dark spaces in your yard or around your home where intruder could hide. Remember that your garage and shed are also vulnerable to intrusion so use this checklist to secure these buildings as well.
